Today, Zionfelix.com gets one of the powerful female voices behind urban radio in Kumasi Mrs. Dayan Aduhene Kwarteng a.k.a Dayan in her residence at Tech, a suburb of Kumasi to have one-on-one chat with her to know more about her life and family, work as a radio presenter, how people of Kumasi see the radio business and more.
In few words, tell us who Dayan Aduhene is
Dayan is a simple young lady in her early 30’s who has been on radio for about seven years. I’m the second born of Mr. and Mrs. Aduhene. I’ married with a lovely baby girl.
Tell us a little bit about your childhood and how you were raised
I started my primary education at Cambridge International School in Kumasi then to Toase Secondary for secondary education. At a point in time I wanted to be a teacher so continued to Akrokeri Training Collage for three years but I had passion for radio so I abandoned teaching and enrolled at IBM & J for journalism. I have lived all my life in Takoradi and Obuasi
Why radio?
I felt in love with Beatrice Aidoo then of GBC and besides I loved the job because I had so much passion for it.
How did it all start for Dayan in the radio business?
After my IBM & J, I was employed to work at Shaft FM in Obuasi, moved to Luv FM and now to where I am now Otec 102.9.
What are some of the challenges you have faced from the onset of your career?
Hmmmm [sigh]. It wasn’t easy I must say. My decision to attend IBM & J was a very hard one since I had already started schooling at Akrokreri Training College. Thinking about all the fees and what people will think about me leaving the school for journalism were some of the difficult decisions ever taken in my life but I knew what I wanted so I finally decided to quite the training college.
There are at times frustrations come when you are on air but as a professional, you need to know how to overcome it.
Does radio pay and if possible can you tell us the range of your salary?
hahhahhahhah oh yes it pays but let me quickly add that it depends on the station you are working with. The pay is good to take care of you and your family. As I said earlier, the cash depends on the station you are working. How reputable the station is will affect your salary. My salary at Otec won’t be the same as someone at that four by three radio station at that corner I don’t want to mention.
People see radio and TV presenters as arrogant. Are you arrogant as people say?
I’m not arrogant as people say. I don’t know the definition of their arrogance because I hang out with lots of people. I mostly get on facebook to chat with my listeners, talk to people at public events so I wonder why people still say I’m arrogant. As I always say, people who are not closer to you have their own notion about you
What do you do apart from radio?
I own a wine shop
How does it feel like working in Kumasi. Do they help?
hahahahah [laughs]. Kumasi is a lovely place to be. Working in Kumasi has been a nice experience because of how they treat radio presenters. I can boldly say that they support radio programs. People complain about how hard is it when working in Kumasi but I will say it depends on you the individual whether to fit in the city or not. If you comport yourself, then you are free to roam about and make noise in the city.
Being a mother, a wife and a radio presenter, how do you manage your time?
I’m lucky my kid and her dad are not with me here at the moment. If you know you have to report to work at 6am, you would have to set off early to be able to reach without traffic catching you up. I managed my time well when they were here to be the good mother and husband I have always wanted and also to report to work on time.
Where is your husband and baby girl?
They are in Europe. Italy to be precised.
I have seen some photos of a beautiful girl on your, is she the one?
Oh yes. That’s my girl. I love her so much. Ofebea, wherever you are, mummy loves you. Hahahah [laughs]
I heard a new radio station wanted you but I can see you are still at Otec Fm, what happened?
Oh yea. Hat you heard was true but i believe in shining where u are than moving to a new place to struggled before y u settle.
Which station was that?
I just want to keep it. I’m sorry I can’t tell you
Will you leave should any anybody bring huge amount to take you from Otec or you are working there till death do you apart?
Hahahhahahaha [laughs]. I will surely not work here till I die but let’s wait and see what God has installed for us
Do you see yourself leaving there any moment from now?
Not really I must say.
Any awards yet?
Not yet but we are still working tirelessly. You know how difficult it is to win award when you are at this part of the country where we are but I strongly believe that with God, our hard works will be recognized in no time
How do you see radio stations in Kumasi as compared to those in Accra?
Well I will say majority is doing well here in Kumasi and I believe they will all get there if they are focused on what they want. For Accra because I’m with them there, I can’t say anything about radio stations there for now but in all we are doing well.
Where do you see yourself and your work in five years?
Wooow!! I can’t wait for that time. I will be out of radio doing my own full time business.
What kind of work do you think about?
I love saving lives so I’m thinking of a big pharmacy shop.
What’s your advice for the youth who wants to venture into showbiz?
For those who want to be in this industry, they should come without fear and also they should be go getters and believe with God on their side, they will get there.
Would you like to thank anybody?
ooooh yeah, I always give people the chance to make shout outs so let me use this this opportunity to also mention some names since I don’t get that chance.
In fact there is this name i will always raise high. He made me who I am today and I will continue to mention his name everywhere I stand before I go to my grave. I’m most grateful to the most High God because if I’m able to play good music today for people to enjoy, then it’s by HIS grace and to my brother and everything Micheal Saint who was with Luv FM. I thank him so much for what he has done for me, as well as Mr. Kwame Karikari, husband of gospel musician Philiper Baafi. They held me high to get to dis far so all I say is GOD bless them all.
In fact I will not forget my listeners who show so much love and care day and night. Those who call on my show to exhibit their love to me and my Facebook friends, God richly bless you all.
Your last words
Keep listening to Dayan on Otec 102.9 FM during weekdays from 10 to 2pm for good music.
