Sherifa Gunu, I will say is a fantastic
artiste who has soared high in her kind of music but she doesn’t satisfy
her fans all the time whenever she is on stage to perform.
The National Players Award (NPA) was telecast on ETV to honor
distinguished footballers last Friday. This was the second edition which
intends to honor ex and current players who have played significant
roles for various national teams. The event was organized by proton
sports service. The award was not given to only the male but the females
as well (the Black Queens).
Sherifa Gunu is one artiste who performed during the event. Sherifa
is a lady with great talent, a princess of Dagbon in the Northern part
of Ghana, dance champion for the Northern Region and first runner up for
the 1998 National Dance Championship but failed to impress me on the
night of the awards.
The performance of Sherifa during the event NPA was appalling.
Instead of performing, she was just talking. She kept on making this
statement, “my CD’s are around so try and buy one” almost throughout the
performance. I think that shouldn’t have been done, it should have been
done by the master of ceremony after her performance. She should have
concentrated more on the performance, she was not dancing as she used
to.
When your performance is awesome the audience reflects it to you
through hailing and even applause. After the performance, the reaction
from the audience was something that didn’t really befit her calibre.
However, she did well by trying to explain the lyrics in the song since
the language is not understood by most people but that was not
necessary.
My other advice to Sherifa is that, she shouldn’t use too much of
computerized instrumentation since that takes away the true African-ness
from her. She can improve her African music by bringing on board
several local instruments such as the “atumpan”, dono”, flute, rattle
and others.
