It is refreshing to however note that some artistes who are advised
by entertainment writers take heed to the advice given them which goes a
long way to impact positively on their careers. One artiste who has won
my respects in this perspective is Okyeame Kwame.
The fact that Okyeame Kwame is a successful artiste is an issue that cannot be overemphasized. Right from the time he was part of the Akyeame duo and for some time now as a solo artiste; Okyeame has chalked so many milestones in his career and won so many awards. Without any doubt, he is a real musician and a successful one too.
In December last year, I wrote an article captioned “Is Okyeame Kwame Really Serious” which was published on flexghana.com. In that article, I sought to find out why a successful musician like Okyeame Kwame in Ghana is not recognized or known on the international level. I could not lay hands on why he would be so comfortable being known solely in Ghana.
In that same article, I spoke about the misconception of artistes claiming they are ”going international” just because they feature artistes from other African countries. I believe artistes featuring other artistes from other African countries do not necessarily suggest they are getting onto the international level. Without any doubt, getting on the international level goes beyond that.
Surprising enough, I could not remember any track that Okyeame Kwame had featured any other artiste from any of the African countries. I advised Okyeame Kwame to put in measures to ensure that he is internationally known and even feature other African artistes if that would make him known in other parts of the continent.
In as much Okyeame Kwame may not have been happy with the headline, it looks like he took my advice in good faith and has actually been working at it. In fact, I got very excited when in April this year, there was a memorable event at the Excel Lounge, when management of Empire Entertainment and One Mic Entertainment came into a one year partnership to do business.
The partnership was geared towards presenting Okyeame Kwame to the international world and make sure he is able to compete and get the opportunity to perform on international platforms. Even though many people felt Okyeame Kwame wasn’t the right person to be promoted onto the international, I think he is a household name and his competence and skill in music makes his consideration for international platforms a good decision.
Just some weeks back, Okyeame Kwame revealed that he would be releasing a new album called ”African Connection”.One distinctive feature of this album is that there would be several collaborations with different musicians all over Africa.
”My current album is ‘African Connection’ and each of the songs have one feature from one African country and some Nigerians too are part. Before the end of the year, you will hear it”, Okyeame Kwame said when he granted an interview to an Accra based radio station.
I feel so fulfilled that Okyeame Kwame adhered to my advice. His career would move to higher heights with the help of God. Other artistes should follow Okyeame Kwame and take any positive advice an entertainment writer would offer rather than tag such a writer as a hater. The influence of an entertainment writer on the career of an artiste or a celebrity should never be taken for granted. The entertainment or showbiz can never be complete without the entertainment writer or critics. I rest my case.
